HMP Featherstone Prison

Union Contractors (Midlands) Ltd, were awarded the works for a large project at HMP Featherstone in Wolverhampton for Kier Build.

The project was being built by Kier Build for The Ministry of Justice.  Kier Build awarded this contract to Union Contractors (Midlands) Ltd following a tender exercise. 

A major new prison was being constructed next to the existing prison at Featherstone, Staffordshire. The project consisted of 11 substantial buildings, which included three 4 storey blocks to accommodate over 1,600 cells, as well as a hospital, segregation unit, first night unit and a reception building.  This major new custodial facility comprises a self-contained Category B Prison and a Young Offender’s Institute

Due to the site being a prison, there were varying factors that had to be taken into account, such as security issues and therefore strict site rules were in place for the duration of the contract.  Some works were carried out within the prison itself with the majority of the work taking place around the whole of the exterior of the site.

Works carried out on included:

Vehicle Service yards (concrete) – Footpaths 360o around the perimeter of each building on site, (concrete) and all kerbing – Concrete Ramps in various locations of the buildings – Adoptable Road Construction and other Road Construction –  Footway Construction – Decorative Concrete Pathways – Block Paving to Car Park –  Emergency Roadway – Drainage Works.

  • 5230m Kerbs
  • 53,116 m2 Sub-base Preparation for Tarmac and Concrete Roads
  • 17,336 m2 Brush Finished Concrete
  • 1,250 m2 Artevia Concrete
  • 12000 m2 of Grasscrete
  • 16500 m2 Porpus Block Paving
  • Land Drains, Manholes, Gullies

All works were carried out on time and without accident or incident.
